The i2CAT Foundation consolidates its technological leadership 2017 with 4.85 million euros in revenue in 2017

  • The research center on Internet and advanced digital technologies has grown 33% in 2015-2017

Barcelona, 12th July 2018 – The i2CAT Foundation maintains its leading position in advanced digital technologies R&D in 2017. The center based in Barcelona has ended its financial year with notable figures in terms of revenue, competitive funds obtainment and execution of R&D projects with companies and public administrations.

In 2017, the i2CAT Foundation has achieved revenues of 4.85 million euros. With a percentage of 33% in growth during the 2015-2017 period, i2CAT strengthens its leadership among national and European technological research centers.

The activities developed by i2CAT within the Horizon 2020 program have meant an achievement of 9 million euros in funding from the European Commission (2014-2017), making i2CAT the 1st research center in Catalonia and the 9th entity in Spain in H2020 fundraising and granting of projects in the ICT sector, only behind multinationals such as Telefónica or universities like UPC. Currently, i2CAT participates in 21 H2020 projects.

The center has stood out most notably in Europe is in the areas of 5G technologies and Virtual Reality, participating in 8 out of the 37 projects on 5G funded by the H2020 program and leading 3 European projects in the field of virtual and immersive technologies.

The creation of the 5GBarcelona initiative is also one of the most outstanding achievements of the year. Presented at the beginning of 2018, 5GBarcelona is a public-private initiative that aims at transforming the metropolitan area of Barcelona into an open and neutral laboratory for the validation and adoption of 5G technologies and services. The i2CAT Foundation is one of the founding members, together with the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), Atos and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

The Catalan research center continues to bet on knowledge transfer to the territory through collaborations based on the experience gained in international research projects.

Specifically, i2CAT has transferred an indoor positioning technology based on Visible Light Communications developed at the center to AASA, a US-based company, through a marketing agreement. The i2CAT Foundation has also collaborated in the development of an agile live video production platform for digital media owned by the start-up Watchity, of which i2CAT has become a shareholder.

The quality of the results obtained by i2CAT has been made clear with the achievement of the TECNIO seal, awarded by the Government of Catalonia through its Agency for Business Competitiveness, ACCIÓ, which certifies the most innovative Catalan technology developers. The center has also obtained the Human Resources Excellence in Research accreditation (HRS4R), which identifies the research institutions that implement the codes and human resource strategies established by the European Commission.
