SOftware-Defined Access using Low-Energy Subsystems

Description

SODALES is a European project of the eight call of the seventh framework programme (FP7) which aims at developing an integrated access network which provides fixed and mobile high speed services in an opened and unified way.

The technologies to be developed range from the physical layer to the management and provision of services layer. Regarding the physical layer, we will work with high capacity WDM systems as well as access systems in order to offer 10Gbps to the users and radio access with LTE technologies and beyond. i2CAT will contribute significantly to the management and provison of services layer, thanks to their OpenNaaS developments.

i2CAT Foundation is the coordinator of this project as well as the leader of the work package responsible for the developments of the management plan.

The project started in November 2012 with discussions about the general architecture of the proposed solution. During 2013, the architecture will be completed and the implementation of both the physical subsystems and the control and management platform will be initiated.

Innovation

SODALES wants to develop a new wireless interconnection access which provides transparent transportation to the fixed and mobile subscribers and supports LTE and fixed access up to 10Gbps in the same convergent network architecture. The most important innovation elements include:

  • Interface and synchronisation between LTE, TDM and the existing systems.
  • Integration of the optical and multiplexing layer.
  • Integration of the platform with off-the-shelf components and modules and hardware interoperability.
