Major European and global companies and research centres have joined their skills in the FI Content 2 initiative to drive innovation at the crossroads of content, media, networks and creativity. This initiative aims at developing and experimenting across Europe cutting edge ICT platforms devoted to applications and services in the areas of social connected TV, smart city services, and pervasive games. The project offers to any European stakeholder, particularly focused on developers and SMEs access to use these open platforms with the support from the FI Content 2 companies and research centres. FI Content 2 is part of the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP), a flagship programme of the European Commission. The main objective hold by the project is to boost the business activity of the FI Content 2 community, through the use of the open platforms, interaction among them and two funding opportunities: An Open Call (expected for early 2014) and a Call for Proposals of the EC (expected by the end of 2013).

Within the FI content 2, it is of strong relevance for the project the creation of a community that will drive the evolution to the third phase of the FI-PPP. This community will validate and experiment with the enablers. SMEs, developers and experts active in areas close to the platforms will be engaged through competitions. These competitions will feed in parallel the establishment of the Open Call and the project itself, thanks to the apps and services developed, and the promotion of FI Content 2 to the industry.

Aligned with this objective, the i2CAT Foundation, with the support of the Barcelona Cultural Laboratory, is participating with a relevant role testing and validating technologic enablers. The Barcelona experimentation site will run combined trials with users on two areas: Smart City Guide and Gaming platform.

Innovation

At technical level, the project is structured according 3 primary types of content: 

  1. High quality audio video and interactive media in the modern and future networked home environment
  2. Location and context-sensitive content (when using mobile devices) 
  3. Interactive gaming content. 

For this reason, the project has set up the three experimentations sites (ICT platforms) to develop innovative application and services. These platforms facilitate the access to these three kinds of contents, creating various scenarios for developing content or content-based applications. 

The Connected TV platform focuses on new application and content concepts to the TV by making use of personalization and recommendation technologies enabled through the means of future Internet technologies and by integrating Web-based services and information sources. Combined with the integration of personal devices into the TV environment, this will create an entirely new level of user experience.

The City Guide platform will make use of curated user-generated content and explore the future of mobile Internet services. Location and context-sensitive content is likely to embrace and demand user-generated content, as useful outputs cannot possibly be achieved by employing professional staff only. The platform will also encourage the involvement of residents and visitors, who can add valuable information about the areas they know, and/or are visiting for the first time.

The Gaming Platform mix real life and Internet experience in a playful way and shows advances in 3D or virtual world environments to make it more immersive and ‘real’. The game platform focuses on multiplayer mobile gaming that leverages the Future Internet technology in order to enable large groups of users to participate in innovative mobile gameplay experiences. A central theme of this new social gaming platform is moving beyond the traditional paradigm in which a user is fixed in front of a console or display. Instead, the game mechanics will blend virtual and real-world experiences so that location-aware games extend past our televisions, weaving the magic of gameplay into multiple real objects and locations. In this way, the game becomes an augmented version of the real world that delivers a more compelling experience than traditional console games or the simplistic social games.

The project will develop an associated deployment plan to provide support for the large-scale expansion of the experimentation platform usages, which is necessary for a successful implementation of phase 3.
