Description

DOLFIN aims to significantly contribute towards improving the energy efficiency of Data Centres and stabilizing of Smart Grids, a holistic approach, across networks of Data Centres and Smart Grids. Today, most DCs are part of computing and storage clouds, offering their customers Virtual Machines (VMs) as a virtual operating environment. DOLFIN will model, monitor, and measure energy consumption and enable seamless, autonomic migration of VMs between servers of the same DC or across a group of Energy-conscious, Synergetic DCs, aiming to optimize the overall energy consumption at the data centre and to stabilize the Smart Grid energy distribution, under peak load and increased demand.

Innovation

DOLFIN approach for optimization of the energy consumption can be considered at different hierarchical levels:

Energy-conscious Synergetic DC level: optimizing the energy consumption in a DC, based on system virtualization, optimal distribution of VMs, dynamic changing of active vs. stand-by servers and load optimisation per active server. 

Group of Energy-conscious Synergetic DCs level: optimizing the cumulative energy consumption in a group of DCs, based on optimal distribution of VMs across the servers that belong in the group of DCs.

Smart City level: optimizing the energy consumption at the smart city level and providing stabilization of the local smart grid, based on optimum distribution of VMs, following an electricity demand-response approach.

Finally, DOLFIN is targeting to validate the overall system, based on realistic business scenarios, in a multiplicity of DCs that exhibit various green-aware characteristics.
