Convergence of Wireless Optical Network and IT Resources in Support of Cloud Services

Informacio

Description

The project is totally focused on the development of new generation point-to-point technologies in order to be able to support the Future Internet. In this sense, the proposed model is based on the infrastructure paradigm as a service, and provides a technological platform that interconnects distributed IT resources which are able to supply a wide range of services to the cloud.

The solution integrates the access network, based on wireless technologies – Wi-Fi and LTEwith the urban optical network, based on WDM technologies, which contains the different IT resources at the ends. The concept of virtualisation included in the project will allow for the sharing of the resources between the different virtual operators, and it will also introduce new business models and the emergence of new opportunities the exploit the different considered resources.

The main objective of the project lies in offering a network infrastructure for a reasonable price in order to support the different services to the cloud, including the access to these ones from wireless technologies, and at the same time it considers the energy efficiency of the solution.

The project started November 2012. The first activities were focused on the analysis of the different technical and business requirements that the proposed solution has to reach. Moreover, the definition of a new business model that includes unified point-to-point services over the different technological domains was started.

Innovation

CONTENT defines and develops different mechanisms which enable the unified virtualisation of network elements from different technologies, and at the same time, they allow for the integration of these ones with elements of the cloud in order to facilitate the supply of different services. The orchestration of wireless network services with urban optical network services becomes one of the key innovative elements for the development of the project.

Benefits

New business models which will enable the infrastructure providers and the different virtual operators to exploit, in an innovative way, the different offered resources and services through the integration and virtualisation of technologically separated network segments.
