TARIFA: The Atomic Redesign of the Internet Future Architecture
Current Internet architecture is becoming more and more ossified and complex; with a number of patches aimed to amend different issues that have arisen during its almost 40 years of existence. New services and computing paradigms require new modes of interaction, new features (identification, context-awareness, seamless service discovery and composition, etc.) and clean solutions to known issues.
TARIFA will provide a clean slate approach to a Future Internet architectural redesign based on a role-based paradigm consisting of non-divisible, or atomic, functions.
Elements of innovation and research more relevant
The project will be developed keeping in mind two main use cases: an evolutionary use case which will demonstrate that the new design of the Future Internet architecture is backwards compatible with the current Internet by building with our approach a service or functionality similar to existing solutions; and a revolutionary use case which will demonstrate that the project is actually solving those problems that the current Internet cannot in an efficient manner.
- The technical core developments of the project will be used to validate the improvements of this new approach and will take into account these three aspects: context-aware service composition, autonomic network management and scalable routing, naming and addressing.
- The project will take into account solutions thought to improve three important lacks of the current Internet: energy efficiency, heterogeneity of information and coexistence of networks.
- The socio-economic impact of the proposed solution will be developed in depth by the project, defining new business models that should be deep studied by the actors involved in the new value chains proposed.
- As a final goal, the project will evaluate, validate and demonstrate the results in an integrated environment.
Industrial and/or social benefits resulting from the project
TARIFA will provide new concepts for future derived projects basically in the following areas:
- Context-aware service composition: study and propose of solutions in order to enable the provisioning of Future Internet services by means of context-aware service composition in order to provide adapted and personalized services, dealing with high dynamic and heterogeneous environments (specially focusing on Future Media Internet and Internet of Things).
- Autonomic network management: define and design a reliable, scalable and robust network infrastructure based on automatic management principles that allow reacting properly to the network conditions in different scenarios in order to guarantee to the end-to-end goals of data flows.
- New routing & addressing paradigms for the Future Internet: give solutions in order to achieve better routing scalability taking into account the separation of IP addresses into Endpoint Locators and Routing Locators and fulfilling the challenges that this solution presents.
- Socio-economic impact: design of novel business models that can be exploited in the context of the Internet of the Future.
